Helpful Hints

Below is a list of Helpful Hints in order to help you with your articles.  Do not be discouraged or upset if your articles are not printed.  The Stillwater Newspress is doing a tremendous job working through the articles we submit and they show great patience with us.  If you are concerned about not getting publish please work with Tom Parks, Director of Press.  Do not contact the Newspress directly regarding SYFA as it will cause great frustration.

Remember:  These articles are not just about getting kids' names in the paper.  We want stories in the paper about games played and how teams scored and who rushed for so many yards.  It's football, not a pat on the back for kids who "try hard".

For example:

  • Articles simply listing a bunch of names and stating that "the kids did a good job." is not going to get printed.

  • Also, little league preseason football stories will not be printed.

  • Articles that  just appear to get as many names in the paper as they can rather than tell what happened in a football game will usually not get printed.

This is what works:
Saturday afternoon in Tulsa, the Golden Eagle fifth grade squad picked up its first win of the season with a 21-0 shutout of Jenks Gold. Golden Eagle running back John Doe scored two touchdowns and rushed for 85 yards on 12 carries to lead the offense.  Doe scored in the first quarter on a 15-yard run and added his second score, a 30-yarder, in the third quarter to put the Eagles up 14-0.

Linebacker Jane Doe led the defense, recording 12 tackles. Doe grabbed a fourth-quarter interception and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown for the game's final margin. Phil Doe, James Doe and Pete Doe also played well on defense, Pete Doe also intercepting a pass.  Jenks' offense struggled all day, rushing for 20 total yards and crossing midfield just once.

Stillwater piled up 210 yards on the ground and quarterback Jesse Doe completed 3-of-8 passes for 35 yards.  The Eagle fifth graders return to action Saturday when they host Jenks White at the Stillwater Junior High Field. Kick off is set for noon.

The above example article tells the story of the game to the reader who was not there.  Tell the story.

  • Hopefully this will help guide you towards what the Newspress is looking for.
  • It also helps to read articles that make it in the paper.
  • Get quotes from coaches after the game.
  • Contact Tom Parks if you need additional help.
  • Don't get frustrated.
